Country Curtains

Country curtains - or Roman blinds - are fabric window treatments which give a relaxed, homely feel to your abode. Curtains made from these fabrics tend to be light in colour (but not in weight as many are lined) and often with pastel tones and in a vintage pattern, or just light, neutral shades. As you’d expect, roses and other flowers tend to feature regularly in the patterns of country-inspired fabrics, as does checks.

Cath Kidston has been a huge and very successful purveyor of country style and old-time fabrics for the last decade or so. Her style tends to be more ‘cute’ and vintage than the sophisticated and elegant manor house type designs such as those produced by the former Welsh design house Elanbach and English designers Cabbages and Roses.

Lace Stripe is a very sweet country curtain fabric from Cath Kidston’s Roomshots collection:

Elanbach’s Anemone pattern definitely has more of a ‘grown up’ feel about it:

Cabbages and Roses produce the ultimate country cottage fabric designs, such as the 1930s-inspired Constance pattern from their Roomshots collection:

But the country cottage look doesn’t have to be all about flowers. Susie Watson Designs’ striped fabric comes in a range of shades and puts a whole new, rather more up to date perspective on country cottage chic:

Style of Country Curtains

There are, of course, many style ranges you could choose from but one of our favourites is the café style tiered look (which is particularly suited to kitchens). Long drapes which extend almost from the ceiling and form on a puddle on your carpeted bedroom floor can look particularly luxurious (and indeed we can testify to that ourselves). These look great too with a matching bedspread, cushions or even wallpaper – you’ll find many designers these days stock wallpaper to match their fabrics for this very reason ie customers looking to co-ordinate cushions with other elements in the room.

Country Curtains and Colour Scheme

As we’ve mentioned colours tend to be subdued or in pastel shades and from the ‘warmer’ end of the colour spectrum, giving the room a homelier feel. Shades such as butter cream, sage green, lavender and buttercup yellow would be particularly popular for this look.

Country Cottage Accessories

When we think of a rustic country cottage style kitchen it’s also with an aga and a large checked tablecloth in mind – or at least one with a brightly coloured floral pattern. Here at Curtains made Simple many of our designer fabrics can be used to produce matching cushions, table cloths, napkins, kitchen seat covers etc and can be bought custom made. Of course, in terms of table cloths and napkins it’s important to check the fabric can be washed easily and won’t show up stains (which is why patterned always works better than plain in this instance).

Why not take a look through out large selection of country kitchen type designs on our website today? You may actually be there some time!
