How to Measure Up For Curtains

General Tips

  • Ensure that the curtain track or pole is fitted prior to measuring.
  • For best fit it is recommended that the track or pole extends beyond the window by 15-30cm on each side to ensure that the curtains can be pulled past the edge of the window. The wider the curtains the more the track or pole should extend past the edge of the window to ensure this happens.
  • It is recommended that the curtain pole or track is 15cm above the window.
  • Use a metal tape measure for increased accuracy.
  • Measure more than once to ensure accuracy.
  • Take your measurements in centimetres to avoid having to convert them later. All measurements entered in the website are in centimetres.

Note: For pinch pleat, goblet, cartridge pleat, box pleat, spaced box pleat and double inverted (Euro) pleat we add 15cm (spring back) to each set of curtains so that the curtains do not need to be pulled tight to ensure that they meet in the middle.

Measuring the Track or Pole Width

  • Measure the width of the track or pole not the width of the window.
    Track Width 1
  • Tracks: measure end to end. If the track overlaps then measure end to end and measure the overlap and add the two values together.
    Track Width 2
  • Poles: measure the distance between the decorative ends (finials).

Hook Position

The hook position is the distance from the top of the curtain to the top of the hook. All curtains come with hooks and ready to hang.

The recommended hook position will depend on if the curtains are hung using a track or a pole:

  • Generally for track we recommend that the curtains finish just above the top of the track. However in recent years, some tracks have become more design led in their aesthetic, so you may decide to make the track visible. If you decide to hide the track, in most cases this will mean a hook position of about 5cm. Measure upwards from the track glider eyelet to check what heading height is required.

Note: Wave curtains always hang under the track. In addition, if you are thinking about having wave curtains you will need to install a special track designed for wave curtains.
    Track Heading Height
  • For poles we recommend a hook position of between 0cm and 5cm, depending on how much of the pole you wish to hide. Measure upwards from the eyelet on the underside of the curtain ring.

For pinch pleat and other more formal heading styles we would recommend a hook position of between 0cm and 1cm as the curtains will stack back more neatly.
    Pole Heading Height

Note: No hook position is required for eyelet, hidden tab top, rod pocket and tab top curtains. Eyelet curtains automatically have a stand up of 3cm above the top of the pole and hidden tab top curtains automatically have a stand up of 2cm above the top of the pole. Tab top curtains by their very nature do not have any part of the curtain above the top of the pole.

Finished Length

For Box Pleat, Cartridge Pleat, Flat Panel, Goblet, Inverted (Euro) Pleat, Pencil Pleat, Pinch Pleat, Spaced Box Pleat, Wave Tape Heading Styles (see below)

  • Tracks: when calculating the finished length; measure the drop (length) from the eyelet on the track gliders and add the hook position value to get the finished length.
    Pole Heading Height
  • Poles: when calculating the finished length; start at the eyelet on the underside of the curtain ring and add the hook position value to get the finished length.
    Pole Heading Height

For Eyelet, Hidden Tab Top, Rod Pocket and Tab Top Heading Styles (see below)

  • Measure from the top of the pole, then add 3cm for eyelet's heading height and add 2cm for hidden tab top heading height.
    Pole Heading Height
Note: eyelet and tab top styles can only be used with poles and not tracking.

For tab top heading styles:

  • The tabs on tab top curtains are 10cm long.
  • The 10cm tabs are included in the drop length that you enter when ordering your tab top curtains.
