Measurements:
How to Measure?

How to Measure

Getting the perfect fit for your made-to-measure roller blind is simple when you know how. Follow our easy measuring guide to ensure your new blind fits beautifully — whether it’s for a recess window or mounted outside the frame.

1. Decide on Your Fitting Type

Before you start measuring, choose whether your blind will be inside the window recess or outside (exact fit).

Recessed:

This is when the blind fits neatly inside the window frame. It’s a great option for a clean, built-in look.

Actual (Outside Recess):

This means the blind is fitted outside the window recess, usually over the wall or window frame. It’s ideal if you want to block out more light or hide an unattractive window frame.

2. Measuring for a Recess Fit

If you’re fitting your roller blind inside the window recess:

Measure the width of the recess in three places — top, middle, and bottom.

Record the smallest measurement.

Measure the drop (height) from the top of the recess to the window sill in three places and take the smallest measurement again.

We’ll make the necessary deductions to ensure your blind fits perfectly within the recess.

Roman Blind Inside Recess

3. Measuring for an Exact Fit (Outside Recess)

If you’re fitting your roller blind outside the recess:

Measure the width of the area you’d like the blind to cover. We recommend adding at least 7.5 cm (3 inches) on each side of the window to help reduce light gaps if that is a priority.

Measure the drop from where you’d like the top of the blind to sit to where you want it to finish.

We’ll make your blind to these exact measurements.

Roman Blind Outside Recess

4. Double-Check Your Measurements

Always use a metal tape measure for accuracy and record all measurements in centimetres. Check twice before placing your order — small differences can make a big impact on the final fit.

Width Measurement:

Actual or Recessed Width

When ordering your made-to-measure roller blind, it’s important to understand the difference between recessed and actual width measurements. The choice determines how your blind will fit your window and the overall look once installed.

Recessed Roller Blinds

Simply measure the width of the recess and we reduce the actual width of the roller blind by 1cm.

A recessed blind is designed to fit inside the window recess — the area between the window frame and the wall. This creates a clean, built-in appearance where the blind neatly sits within the opening.

When you select a recessed fit, the blind will be made 1cm narrower than your measured width to ensure it fits comfortably within the recess and operates smoothly. This small deduction allows room for the brackets and mechanism.

Recessed roller blinds are ideal for a minimalist, space-saving look, and they work particularly well when paired with curtains or pelmets for a layered finish.

Actual Width Roller Blinds

We will make your roller blinds to the width that you supply us with.

An actual width blind is typically installed outside the window recess, overlapping the frame or wall. This option provides full window coverage, helping to block out more light and enhance privacy.

Because the blind extends beyond the window opening, it also helps reduce light gaps around the edges — a great choice for bedrooms or media rooms where darkness matters.

Actual width roller blinds are often chosen for decorative purposes too, as they visually frame the window and can make smaller windows appear larger.

Choosing the Right Option

  • Recessed Fit: Sleek, flush look; ideal for modern interiors and windows with deep recesses.
  • Actual Width Fit: Better light control and privacy; perfect when you want to make a bold statement or cover imperfections around the window frame.

Whichever style you choose, each blind is made to your exact measurements for a professional finish and effortless functionality.

Actual or Recessed Width
Standard or Reverse Roll:

Standard or Reverse Roll

When ordering your made-to-measure roller blind, you’ll need to choose between a Standard Roll or a Reverse Roll finish. This simple choice determines how your blind fabric hangs from the tube — subtly changing both the look and function of your window dressing.

Standard Roll

In a standard roll, the fabric drops close to the window, with the material rolling off the back of the tube. This option offers a sleek, fitted appearance, ideal for maximising privacy and blocking light effectively. It’s especially popular for blinds fitted inside window recesses, as it helps minimise gaps and creates a clean, streamlined look.

Reverse Roll

With a reverse roll, the fabric falls in front of the tube, creating a softer, more decorative finish. This style hides the roller mechanism from view and works well if you’re fitting your blind outside the recess or want to clear window handles or obstructions. It also adds a more designer-style look to your blind.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Standard Roll if you prefer a tidy, practical finish that sits close to the glass.

Choose Reverse Roll if you’d like the fabric to hang further away from the window, or want to conceal the roller and brackets for a neater appearance.

Whichever option you select, both Standard and Reverse Roll blinds are custom-made to fit your measurements perfectly — offering the same smooth operation and high-quality finish every time.

Fabric Backing:

Fabric Backing Options

Our roller blinds come with two backing options. Plain; lets some light through the fabric. Blackout; stops light passing through the fabric.

Plain is suitable for all rooms except bedrooms or windows that receive strong direct sunlight.

Light resistant conversely are ideal for bedrooms and rooms that receive strong direct sunlight.

Backing Colour:

Backing Colour

When choosing your made-to-measure roller blinds, the backing colour is an important detail that can affect both the look and performance of your blinds. The backing is the layer that faces the window, and while it might not be visible from inside your room, it plays a key role in light control, energy efficiency, and exterior appearance.

We have two choices of colour; cream or white.

Cream is a practical colour as it hides any dirt.

White has the practical benefit of reflecting back sunlight, which may be an important consideration depending on where you live and the direction the window faces.

If you have selected non-light reflecting backing and the main fabric is a light coloured fabric, we would recommend selecting white.

Chain Colour:

Chain Colour

Add the perfect finishing touch to your roller blinds with our range of stylish roller blind chain colours. Small details can make a big difference, and the chain is no exception — it not only provides smooth, reliable operation but also complements your chosen fabric and interior style.

Our collection includes a variety of chain colour options, from antique bronze, black, brass, chrome, gunmetal and white (metal not plastic) finishes, allowing you to coordinate your blind with the rest of your room’s fittings.

Roller Blind Chain Colour

Each chain colour is designed to match our made-to-measure roller blinds perfectly, offering a consistent, polished appearance. For added safety, all chains come with a compliant child-safety device, ensuring your blind not only looks great but is safe to use in any home environment.

Whether you want your chain to blend in or stand out, you’ll find the perfect match in our collection of roller blind chain colours — a small detail that makes a big impact.

Chain Position:

Chain Position

When ordering your made-to-measure roller blinds, you can choose which side you’d like the control chain to be positioned - left or right. This small detail can make a big difference to the comfort and practicality of your blind’s operation.

Choosing the chain position allows you to tailor your blind to the layout of your room. For example, if your window opens on one side, or if furniture such as a sofa or wardrobe sits close to the frame, selecting the opposite side for your chain can make it easier to reach and operate.

Curtains Made Simple, every roller blind is made to order, so you can decide what works best for your space. Whether you prefer the chain on the left or right, your blind will be finished with the same high-quality fittings and smooth, reliable mechanism — designed for everyday use and lasting performance.

Fixing Brackets:

Bracket Colour

Our metal roller blind brackets add 6cm to the width of the roller blind, in total.

Roller Blind Chain Colour

For the discerning customer we offer a range of different colours, other than the standard white. These include black, brass, bronze and pewter.

The brackets come with screws and wall plugs (masonary fixing).

Pelmet:

Pelmet Options

Complete your made to measure roller blind with a beautifully finished pelmet or roller shield, designed to conceal the blind’s roll and brackets for a sleek, contemporary look. Our pelmet options come in a range of heights to suit your window style and the proportions of your blind.

Pelmet – 10cm High

The 10cm pelmet is ideal for smaller windows or where a minimalist finish is desired. Compact yet stylish, it neatly hides the roller mechanism while maintaining a clean, understated appearance. Perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, and modern interiors where simplicity is key.

Pelmet – 15cm High

Offering a balanced look, the 15cm pelmet provides slightly more coverage, creating a refined frame around your blind. It’s a versatile choice that suits most window sizes and adds a subtle decorative touch without overpowering the design.

Pelmet – 20cm High

For a bold, luxurious statement, the 20cm pelmet adds extra height and presence. This option is ideal for larger windows or for creating a more dramatic, tailored finish. It enhances the overall aesthetic by giving the top of your blind a strong, architectural feel.

Roller Shield – 9.5cm High

The Roller Shield is a modern alternative to the traditional pelmet. Measuring 9.5cm in height, it fits neatly over the roller mechanism, providing a smooth, discreet cover that blends seamlessly with contemporary décor. It’s a smart, space-saving solution for a crisp and polished look.

Each option can be made in the same fabric as your roller blind or a contrasting material to create a unique design feature. Whichever style you choose, our pelmets and shields ensure your blind looks as good as it functions — perfectly finished from top to bottom.

Installation Height:

Installation Height

The roller blind installation height is the distance between the top of the roller blind and the floor.

We need to know this, so that we can comply with child safety regulations.

The objective of the child safety regulations is to minimise the risk of choking or strangulation.

This is achieved by the lowest part of the operating chain being at least 1.5m from the floor.

It is advised that furniture should not be placed near the operation chain, in case a child climbs on the furniture to play with the operating chain.

DELIVERY & RETURNS

This is a summary of our policies, the full terms can be found here: UK & Int Delivery Returns & Refunds.

In most situations, cut-length fabric will be delivered within 7 days or less and made-to-measure orders 2-4 weeks. Where this cannot be achieved, you will be informed by email.

Delivery within mainland UK is £9 for all orders except cut-length fabric, where it is free on orders over £90. Delivery charges to other countries can be found here.

Refunds are generally not possible, due to the majority of the goods we sell being made-to-order or cut-to-order items and thus not subject to the Distance Selling Regulations. However, where errors have been made due to incorrect measurements or specifications, we will try to find a satisfactory solution to the issue.

Cancellation of orders will result in a 100% refund if no work has started or the fabric has not been sent by the supplier. After this, refunds will be the value of the order less costs incurred up until this point.
