Measurements:
How to Measure?

How To Measure Up For Roman Blinds

General Tips

  • Use a metal tape measure for increased accuracy.
  • Measure more than once to ensure accuracy.
  • For large windows 2 roman blinds side by side sometimes works better than one large bulky one.
  • Take your measurements in centimetres to avoid having to convert them later. All measurements entered in the website are in centimetres.

If any of the following are true then the blind should be positioned outside the recess:

  • The window recess is less than 4cm. As most of the roman blind will sit outside the recess.
  • The window opens inwards.
  • The recess is not square (or wonky to use a non technical term); the recess width varies by more than 2cm when measured at different points OR recess height varies by more than 2cm when measured at different points OR diagonal distances differs by more than 2cm (see example diagram below where A not = B).

    Track Width 1

Inside Recess

  • Advantages: easier to fit as it can be attached to the top of the window frame.
  • Disadvantage: once pulled up it will obscure the top part of the window.
Note: For recessed roman blinds the actual width dimension of the roman blind will be reduced by 1cm to ensure it fits in the recess.

Track Width 1

Width

  • Measure across the width in several places and take the smallest measurement. We will reduce the width by a further 1cm to ensure that it hangs freely and does not drag against the side of the window recess.

Height

  • Measure the height in several places and take the smallest measurement.

Write down which side you want the blind chain to hang and that the roman blind is recessed.

Outside Recess

  • Advantages: once pulled up it will not obscure the top part of the window.
  • Disadvantage: harder to fit as it has to be fixed to a solid wall.

Track Width 1

Width

  • Decide how far you want the fabric to overlap each side of the window. We recommend between 5cm and 10cm on each side.

Height

  • Decide how far you want the fabric to overlap top and bottom. We recommend between 5cm and 10cm below and between 10cm and 15cm above (to ensure that when pulled up the blind does not obscure the top of the window).

Write down which side you want the blind chain to hang and that the roman blind is not recessed.

Sidewinder Mechanism

  • The top bar contains a winding mechanism that pulls up the blind fabric and is operated by a side chain.
  • Built-in safety mechanism within the side gearing mechanism means that the chain will automatically detach if excessive force is applied.
  • Smoother operation when used with larger roman blind sizes.
  • More formal look.
  • High quality heavy duty metal mechanism.
  • Choice of chain colours. The standard chain colour is chrome but you can also select antique brass, black, black nickel, brass, copper or white metal.
  • We always recommend the sidewinder option where children are likely to be present, as they are inherently safer.

Width Measurement:

Actual or Recessed Width

When ordering made to measure Roman Blinds, it’s important to decide whether your blinds will be fitted inside a window recess or outside it. This choice determines how your blinds are measured and finished, ensuring a perfect fit and professional look.

Recessed Roman Blinds

Simply measure the width of the recess and we reduce the actual width of the roman blind by 1cm.

A recessed Roman Blind is designed to sit neatly within the window recess, providing a clean and built-in appearance. This option is ideal if you want a sleek finish that frames the window perfectly.

When measuring for a recessed fit, we recommend taking three measurements across the width and height of the recess and supply the smallest measurements.

Benefits of Recessed Roman Blinds:

  • Creates a minimalist, flush look within the window frame
  • Ideal for windows with enough recess depth
  • Helps block light effectively when paired with blackout lining
  • Keeps window sills clear for ornaments or plants

Actual Width (Exact Size) Roman Blinds

An actual width, or exact size, Roman Blind is made to your stated measurements without any deductions. This option is best when the blind will be mounted outside the recess, covering the window frame completely.

By fitting above and beyond the recess, the blind offers greater light control and can make a window appear larger. It also helps reduce draughts and ensures full fabric coverage around the edges of the window.

Benefits of Actual Width Roman Blinds:

  • Provides maximum window coverage and improved privacy
  • Ideal for uneven recesses or shallow window frames
  • Prevents light leakage around the sides
  • Adds a sense of height and drama to a room

Choosing the Right Option

If your window has a deep recess and you prefer a neat, tailored look, go for a recessed fit. If you’d like to make more of a design statement or need to block more light, choose an actual width (outside recess) blind.

Actual or Recessed Width
Cascaded Or Stacked:

Cascaded or Stacked

When choosing your made-to-measure Roman blinds, you’ll have the option of how the fabric folds stack when the blind is raised — Cascaded (Waterfall) or Stacked. While both styles create the same smooth, elegant appearance when lowered, they offer slightly different finishes at the top of the window when drawn up.

Cascaded Roman Blinds

Cascaded Roman blinds (also known as waterfall or layered fold blinds) feature gently graduated folds that fall one below the other when the blind is raised. Each pleat is visible, creating a soft, flowing look that highlights the texture and pattern of the fabric.

Track Width 1    Track Width 1

This style works beautifully with patterned or textured fabrics and adds a touch of luxury and depth to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Key Features:

  • Each fold remains visible when raised
  • Ideal for showcasing patterned or textured fabrics
  • Creates a decorative, layered appearance
  • Perfect for adding visual softness to a room
  • The cascaded option hangs flatter when pulled up compared to the stacked option, which projects further out.

Stacked Roman Blinds

Stacked Roman blinds (sometimes called flat fold blinds) have all the folds neatly stacked directly behind each other when the blind is raised. This produces a cleaner, more minimal look, as only the top fold is visible.

Stacked blinds are a popular choice for modern interiors or where a sleek, uncluttered finish is preferred.

Key Features:

  • Folds stack neatly behind one another
  • Offers a crisp, contemporary look
  • Best suited to plain or lightly textured fabrics
  • Keeps attention on the fabric design when lowered

Which Style Should You Choose?

Your choice between Cascaded and Stacked Roman blinds depends on the look you want to achieve.

  • Choose Cascaded for a soft, decorative finish that enhances the beauty of your fabric or for roman blinds longger than 160cm.
  • Choose Stacked for a simple, refined look that complements modern décor.

Whichever you prefer, both options are made to measure and handcrafted to ensure a perfect fit for your windows.

Lining:

Lining Options

When choosing your made to measure Roman Blinds, the lining you select can make all the difference to how your blinds look, feel, and perform. Whether you’re aiming for maximum light control, extra insulation, or a softer drape, our range of lining options ensures your Roman Blinds are perfectly tailored to your home and lifestyle.

Plain Lining

Plain lining is a classic choice for everyday use. It provides a neat, professional finish to your blinds while offering a gentle layer of protection against sunlight. This lining helps preserve your fabric’s colour and texture over time, softens the overall appearance, and allows a pleasant filtered light to enter the room. Perfect for living spaces, kitchens, or areas where complete darkness isn’t required.

Blackout Lining

If you want to block out light completely, our blackout lining is the ideal option. Crafted from a specially coated fabric, it prevents unwanted light from passing through — making it perfect for bedrooms, nurseries, and media rooms. In addition to offering near-total darkness, blackout lining also provides extra privacy and a slightly heavier drape for a more luxurious look.

Plain and Blackout Bonded Lining

For both the plain and the blackout lining options, if the blind is not interlined, then we use a bonded interlined version of the plain or blackout linings. This makes the roman blind look more substantial, provides additional insulation and the folds form more easily when the blind is raised.

Thermal Lining

Stay cosy in winter and cool in summer with our thermal lining. This option adds an insulating layer that helps regulate room temperature and improve energy efficiency. The thicker fabric helps reduce heat loss through windows and even offers a degree of sound dampening. A smart, energy-conscious choice for any room — particularly draughty windows or colder spaces.

No Lining

For a lightweight, minimal look, you can also choose no lining. This allows the beauty of the fabric to shine through naturally, letting in the most light and creating an airy, delicate effect. Unlined Roman Blinds are best suited to decorative use or where privacy and light control are less of a concern, such as sunrooms, conservatories, or secondary windows.

Find Your Perfect Finish

Each Roman Blind is made to measure and expertly crafted to your specifications. With our range of linings — plain, blackout, thermal, or unlined — you can create the perfect balance of style, comfort, and functionality for your home.

Lining Options
Fire Retardant:
Lining Colour:

Lining Colour

When customising your made to measure Roman Blinds, choosing the right lining colour is an important finishing touch that can subtly influence both the look and feel of your blinds. We offer two elegant lining colour options — White and Ivory — to complement your chosen fabric and interior décor perfectly.

White Lining

A crisp and clean choice, white lining enhances the brightness of your window treatment. It’s ideal for modern or minimal interiors and pairs beautifully with light or cool-toned fabrics. White lining also helps reflect more natural light, creating a fresh, airy appearance both inside and from the outside of your home.

Ivory Lining

Soft and warm in tone, ivory lining offers a gentle contrast that complements warmer colour palettes and traditional interiors. It gives your Roman Blinds a subtle richness and is particularly suited to cream, beige, or pastel fabrics. From the exterior, ivory provides a softer finish that blends well with most window frames and façades.

Both lining colours are available across our plain, blackout, thermal, and interlined options, ensuring your blinds look as good as they perform. Whether you prefer the crisp brightness of white or the cosy warmth of ivory, your Roman Blinds will be beautifully finished to suit your space.

Lining Colour
Interlining:

Interlined Roman Blinds

Add a touch of luxury and warmth to your home with our interlined Roman blinds. Combining elegant style with superior insulation, these blinds are the perfect choice for anyone looking to enhance both the look and comfort of their space.

What Are Interlined Roman Blinds?

Interlined Roman blinds feature a soft, insulating layer of interlining fabric sandwiched between the decorative front fabric and the lining. This extra layer not only adds fullness and structure to the blind but also helps improve heat retention and light control, making them ideal for draughty windows or cooler rooms.

Benefits of Interlined Roman Blinds

  • Enhanced Warmth & Insulation – The interlining acts as a thermal barrier, keeping your room warmer in winter and helping to reduce energy costs.
  • Luxurious Appearance – The added padding gives your blinds a plush, tailored look with beautifully defined folds that hang smoothly.
  • Improved Light Control – Interlining helps block more light than a standard lining, creating a softer, more ambient atmosphere.
  • Noise Reduction – The additional fabric layers can help reduce outside noise, adding a sense of calm and comfort to your home.

Perfect for Any Room

Interlined Roman blinds are especially popular in living rooms, bedrooms and period homes, where their rich, opulent finish complements traditional interiors. They’re also an excellent choice for rooms that need a little extra insulation without compromising on style.

When not to Have Interlined Roman Blinds

Unless you have set your heart on having your roman blinds interlined, we suggest that for roman blinds longer than 140cm that you don't have them interlined. The reason for this is that there will be potentially excessive blulk when the blind is pulled up.

Interlined Roman Blinds
Handsewn:

Hand Sewn Roman Blinds

We pride ourselves on offering a full range of make-up options. Including the traditional hand-sewn option. Both the handsewn and non-handsewn options will result in high-quality roman blinds and to the untrained eye, the difference will be minimal.

The only difference between the machine-sewn and the hand-sewn option is that the side hems and the horizontal stitch line 2cm from the top of the roman blind are hand-sewn.

For machine-sewn, the only visible machine stitching, is a single horizontal stitch line 2cm below the top of the roman blind.

For both hand-sewn and machine-sewn, there is no other visible machine stitching apart from almost imperceptible hand-stab stitches to hold the rods.

Our interlined roman blinds are hand-sewn by default. This is because the ‘tightness’ of machine sewing three layers of material (main fabric, interlining and lining fabric) will not allow the roman blinds to hang as well as they would have had they been hand-sewn.

Chain Colour:

Chain Colour

Add the perfect finishing touch to your made-to-measure Roman blind with a choice of stylish chain colours. The control chain not only allows you to smoothly raise and lower your blind but also complements your fabric and interior décor.

Our Roman blind chains are available in a selection of modern and classic finishes, allowing you to coordinate with your window hardware or room accents. Choose from:

  • Chrome – A sleek, polished finish that adds a touch of modern elegance. Perfect for contemporary interiors and neutral fabrics.
  • Black – A sophisticated, understated finish ideal for minimalist or industrial-style interiors.
  • Brass – A warm, golden hue that enhances classic or vintage-inspired spaces.
  • Bronze – A timeless, muted metallic option that pairs beautifully with richer or darker fabrics.
  • Copper – An earth reddish-brown that adds character and warmth to your room.
  • Gunmetal – A slightly softer metallic tone that suits both traditional and modern rooms.
  • White – Provides a discreet and minimalist aesthetic to situations where you want the chain to blend in with the window frame surround..

Each colour option is carefully selected to ensure durability, ease of use, and a premium look. Whether you prefer a minimalist aesthetic or a bold statement detail, your chosen chain colour will help your Roman blind blend seamlessly into your home or stand out as a refined accent.

Complete your Roman blind with a chain colour that reflects your style and enhances your décor.

Chain Colour
Chain Position:

Chain Position

When designing your made-to-measure Roman Blind, one of the important finishing choices is the chain position — whether you’d like the control chain on the left-hand or right-hand side of the blind. This detail may seem small, but it can make a big difference to how convenient and comfortable your blind is to use every day.

The chain controls the blind’s smooth and precise operation, allowing you to raise or lower the fabric to your preferred height for perfect light and privacy control. Choosing the correct side ensures easy access to the control mechanism and prevents awkward reaches or obstructions.

When deciding which side to position the chain on, consider the following:

  • Accessibility: Choose the side that’s easiest to reach, particularly if the window is near furniture, a wall, or within a corner recess.
  • Multiple Blinds: If you have several blinds on one window or across a room, positioning all chains on the same side (or alternating sides) can improve usability and create a more streamlined look.
  • Safety: Each Roman Blind comes with a compliant safety device to secure the chain to the wall, keeping it taut and reducing the risk of entanglement.

At Curtains Made Simple, every Roman Blind is made to your exact measurements and specifications — from the fabric and lining to the chain position and headrail type. Choosing your preferred chain side ensures your blinds not only look beautiful but also operate effortlessly in your space.

Installation Height:

Installation Height

The roman blind installation height is the distance between the top of the roman blind and the floor.

We need to know this, so that we can comply with child safety regulations.

The objective of the child safety regulations is to minimise the risk of choking or strangulation.

This is achieved by the lowest part of the operating chain being at least 1.5m from the floor.

It is advised that furniture should not be placed near the operation chain, in case a child climbs on the furniture to play with the operating chain.

DELIVERY & RETURNS

This is a summary of our policies, the full terms can be found here: UK & Int Delivery Returns & Refunds.

In most situations, cut-length fabric will be delivered within 7 days or less and made-to-measure orders 2-4 weeks. Where this cannot be achieved, you will be informed by email.

Delivery within mainland UK is £9 for all orders except cut-length fabric, where it is free on orders over £90. Delivery charges to other countries can be found here.

Refunds are generally not possible, due to the majority of the goods we sell being made-to-order or cut-to-order items and thus not subject to the Distance Selling Regulations. However, where errors have been made due to incorrect measurements or specifications, we will try to find a satisfactory solution to the issue.

Cancellation of orders will result in a 100% refund if no work has started or the fabric has not been sent by the supplier. After this, refunds will be the value of the order less costs incurred up until this point.
